Install
Stone Cast does not install. Made for wood or steel stringers. Bolt on. NO NOTCHING stringers! FASTER INSTALL!!
Bolt on. No notching.
Hang on wood or steel stringers. Do not notch the stringers. Two brackets per tread, bolted through four cast-in inserts. Lags from the bracket into the stringer are supplied by the installer.
Faster install
Measure the clear width between stringers. Order 42″ or 48″. Count the rises. One tread per step. You or your carpenter hang them.
Installation tips
Stone Cast does not install. Have your carpenter or deck builder set the stringers to these numbers.
Stringer options
Treated lumber, KDAT, treated PWT LVL, cedar, or steel. Use a 2x12 minimum on wood. Bolt the treads on. Do not notch the stringers.
PWT treated LVL is above-ground only. Keep a 1″ standoff off concrete. Cedar works for the look — use a full 2x12 and a third stringer on 48″ runs.
The demo stair uses a sistered KDAT 2×12 (two 2×12s fastened together). KDAT is already dry, so it can be stained before it goes up. No waiting on wet treated lumber.
Open risers
Treads are 3½″ thick. Keep the rise at 7⅜″ or less so the gap between treads stays under 4″. Then a closed riser is not required on most residential stairs.
Max rise by code is still 7¾″. A 7½″ rise opens a 4″ hole with this tread. Confirm with the local inspector.
Bracket-to-stringer hardware — not included
Stone Cast supplies the two brackets and the bolts that go into the four cast-in inserts in the tread. Fasteners from the bracket into the stringer are not in the box. They change with the stringer.
The bracket is drilled for a ⅜″ lag. Typical wood stringer: ⅜″ hot-dip galvanized or stainless lag with a washer, long enough to get solid thread into the 2x12. Steel stringer: ⅜″ bolt or the fastener your fabricator specs. Do not use plain zinc-plated lags in treated lumber.
Ask your carpenter or deck builder what to use on that stringer. On a permitted job, confirm with the local building inspector.

Demo staircase
Stringers on the demo are a sistered pair of KDAT treated 2×12s. Because KDAT is kiln-dried after treatment, the wood was stained before install. No months of waiting for green treated lumber to dry.
Tops of the stringers were taped, then capped with aluminum flashing. That keeps water off the end grain and the top edge under the treads.
Medium gray demo on the stringers. Bourbon is the single tread on the grass.
